InSpirational Column: Jesus, The Cornerstone

By Joyce Balentine

Is Jesus the Cornerstone of your life? Is He the foundation on which you build your spiritual home? As Christians we must be anchored in Jesus. Without Him we will not be able to withstand the storms of life.

When I was a young girl, we went through the agony of building a new home. I remember my parents going over the plans and worrying about the outcome of the new place that we had waited for so long. A new home was being created in which our family would live for many years. Each design and each blueprint was developed to make our home the very best it could be. We would go to the site, as they were layingthe foundation. It was exciting to see the blueprints, turn into a wonderful home.

The workers toiled through the unpleasant weather, but slowly the walls of the house took shape. It was still difficult to see how the final design would look. Many anxious days and nights were spent making sure that everything would be just right. Do we put  the same care and concern into the foundation for our spiritual homes?

Like the man who built his home on the sand, we have a choice about what we choose to be the foundation of our spiritual homes. We sometimes tend to forget that God is in control. His love for us gave us the foundation that we need for our lives.Through His Word, He gave us the blueprints that will guide us as we build our Christian home. The first step is anchoring our faith in Jesus Christ.

What is the definition of a home? It is a place where we can feel safe and protected from the outside world. It is a place where we rest and refresh ourselves for another day. God has given us the plans to build a home that will last through all of the storms and and trials that come our way.

What happens if we build our home in the sand? If our homes are not built on solid ground, then they will shift and eventually crumble. If our homes are built with Jesus as the cornerstone and the foundation, they will be strong and able to withstand the tests of time. If we try to go through each day, without Jesus, we will fail miserably, but with Jesus as our foundation, our homes will be made strong by His strength.

Matthew 7:24-27, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand. And the rain descended, and the floods came and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

Jesus is the Cornerstone and He is the foundation of our lives. Walking in His footsteps will insure that we keep ourselves on solid ground. His words of wisdom and love will keep our foundation from crumbling. Our spiritual home will continue to be strong, able to withstand anything that this world throws at us. It is up to us to choose the foundation for our spiritual homes. Using the Bible as our blueprint, we will be able to build a solid home, that neither time, nor trials can tumble. Our home will be strong,  a shinging beacon to a lost world.
